Key Player Alert: Pavlidis poses threat for Benfica in Benfica vs Barcelona matchup

Benfica and Barcelona faced each other in a thrilling match at the Estádio da Luz earlier in the season, where a total of nine goals were scored. The two teams will clash once again at the same stadium in the first leg of their last 16 encounter on Wednesday.

While a repeat of the high-scoring affair is unlikely, an exciting game can still be anticipated as both teams, known for their attacking prowess, go head-to-head.

During the previous league game in January, Benfica's Vangelis Pavlidis netted a hat-trick in the first half. The Greek striker, who is in great form, will aim to trouble Barcelona once more in Wednesday's match.

Team news

Bruma is set to make his European debut for Benfica after serving a suspension from his time at Braga in the Europa League.

Florentino is technically available after a suspension but is ruled out with a thigh injury, along with Alexander Bah, Manu Silva, Tiago Gouveia (all knee injuries), Renato Sanches, and Angel Di Maria (both muscle injuries) for the Portuguese side.

Gavi was on the bench in Barca's last game due to illness and could return to the starting lineup in Lisbon.

Andreas Christensen is sidelined with a calf injury for around four weeks, while Marc Bernal and Marc-Andre ter Stegen remain long-term absentees for the visitors.

The stats

Benfica is on an eight-game unbeaten streak, scoring 17 goals during this period.

Barcelona is aiming to extend their undefeated run to 15 games.

In the league phase, Barcelona conceded an average of 2.5 goals per game away from home.

Pavlidis has scored seven of Benfica's 19 goals in the Champions League.

Prediction

Barcelona's thrilling 5-4 victory over Benfica was a highlight of the league phase, and they are set to face each other once more in the last 16.

The Catalan side is the clear favorite to advance in the tie and might even secure a lead to take back home to Camp Nou. Nevertheless, Benfica is expected to score in front of their supporters, with Pavlidis being a strong candidate to find the back of the net.

The Greek forward has been in superb form recently, scoring eight goals in his last eight matches, with only one game without scoring. Pavlidis impressed with a quick hat-trick the last time Barcelona visited, and he has been averaging 2.4 shots per game in the competition.
