Scotland successfully neutralize Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal's attack

Scotland earned their first point in the Nations League by playing to a courageous goalless draw against Portugal at Hampden Park.

Much of the attention was on the Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who was either booed, jeered, or cheered by the Tartan Army every time he got involved in the game.

Despite Roberto Martinez's team, leading League A Group 1 with nine points, dominating possession, they were wasteful in front of goal, while the Scottish team defended tenaciously.

After losing their first three matches, Steve Clarke's team managed to secure a point and a clean sheet against a top-tier nation, which will boost their confidence before facing Croatia and Poland next month.

Clarke had to deal with a depleted squad once again, but there were signs of positivity following the team's 2-1 loss in Zagreb on Saturday.

Youthful attacker Ben Doak retained his place in the starting line-up, with the only change being Che Adams replacing Lyndon Dykes.

In their previous encounter, Portugal defeated Scotland 2-1 in Lisbon with Ronaldo scoring a late winner. The visitors fielded top-class players like Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, and Diogo Jota. However, it was the home team that had the best chances early on.

Midfielder Scott McTominay squandered a great opportunity in the fourth minute by heading an Andrew Robertson cross straight at keeper Diogo Costa. Costa also denied a decent effort from Ryan Christie.

In between those chances, Ronaldo had his first threatening moment with a left-footed shot from the edge of the box, which was saved by veteran keeper Craig Gordon.

Portugal dominated possession and continuously pressed the Scotland defense, with Gordon stopping a Nuno Mendes free-kick in the 25th minute.

There was an amusing incident when Ronaldo and Mendes argued over a free-kick, leading to a loss of possession. Ronaldo then missed a chance early in the second half, shooting over the bar.

Scotland struggled to gain control of the game and move forward, prompting Clarke to introduce Ryan Gauld and Lewis Morgan in the 66th minute, replacing Doak and Christie.

There was a moment of excitement as a Morgan cross found Adams, who headed the ball across the goal to McTominay, but the opportunity was cleared. Napoli's midfielder also narrowly missed a cross from Anthony Ralston during a quick counter-attack.

Ronaldo failed to hit the target with another attempt in the 82nd minute, showing his frustration as the match ended.

Scotland focused on defense in the final minutes, with Gordon making an impressive save from Fernandes' close-range shot. An intruder briefly disrupted the game, attempting to reach Ronaldo before being stopped by a steward, much to the delight of the fans.

Aberdeen full-back Nicky Devlin made his debut as he replaced Ralston and made a crucial block to deny Rafael Leao, capping off a positive evening for Scotland.
