Eberechi Eze scores twice as Crystal Palace hand Tottenham reality check with a defeat

Tottenham, who reached the Europa League final, suffered a heavy defeat against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Eberechi Eze scored twice in a 2-0 victory for Palace.

Just days after securing a spot in the European final against Manchester United with a 5-1 aggregate win over Bodo/Glimt, Tottenham, managed by Ange Postecoglou, faced their 20th league defeat of the season.

This loss set a new record for Tottenham, surpassing their previous worst tally of 19 defeats in both the 1993-94 and 2003-04 seasons.

The injury to Dejan Kulusevski in the first half was a concern for Postecoglou, although there was a positive note with captain Son Heung-min returning to the pitch after a month due to a foot injury.

Crystal Palace, preparing for the upcoming FA Cup final, secured three points thanks to Eze's goals before and after halftime, completing a league double over Tottenham.

Both teams have important matches ahead, with Postecoglou making eight changes to the starting lineup following the victory in Bodo, while Palace fielded one of their strongest lineups.

An early opportunity for Palace was disallowed by VAR due to a narrow offside, as Daniel Munoz found Ismaila Sarr to score, but Mateta was deemed offside.

Despite early injury concerns with Kulusevski, who had to be substituted after a knock from Marc Guehi, Palace continued pressing, with Tottenham's goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky making saves and needing treatment for Mathys Tel.

Palace kept creating chances, with Mateta and Munoz testing Kinsky before Lacroix had a goal disallowed due to handball in the buildup.

However, Palace broke the deadlock just before halftime as Munoz assisted Eze for an easy tap-in to make it 1-0.

Postecoglou brought on Yves Bissouma at halftime, but a defensive lapse allowed Eze to score a second goal and extend Palace's lead to 2-0.

A swift counter-attack led to Eze's second goal after Sarr set him up, putting the result almost beyond doubt for Palace.

Although Tottenham tried to respond late in the game, with Odobert and Pape Sarr missing chances, Palace held on to secure the victory.

The return of Son boosted the home crowd briefly, but Palace nearly added a third goal before the final whistle, leading to frustration among the Tottenham supporters.
