County had a chance to equalize late in the game, but Dundee United's defense held firm. The win puts Dundee United six points ahead of St Mirren in seventh place with two games left before the league splits.
Ross County remain four points behind sixth-placed Hearts and are also four points clear of the relegation play-off position.
