Charlie Whitaker scores twice to help Notts County defeat Newport.

Two goals scored by Charlie Whitaker, a product of Everton's academy, helped Notts County boost their promotion chances in League Two with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Newport.

Notts County, who had struggled with just one victory in six games leading up to this match, ended the month of March on a positive note thanks to Whitaker's brace, taking his goal tally to four since joining from Goodison Park in January.

The 21-year-old put Notts County ahead in the sixth minute with a composed finish into the bottom corner after a pass from Nick Tsaroulla split the Newport defense.

Although David McGoldrick came close to extending the lead and Tsaroulla was thwarted by Newport keeper Nick Townsend just before halftime.

Despite former Notts County player Josh Martin having two attempts on goal for Newport, it was experienced striker McGoldrick who set up Whitaker for his second goal in the 63rd minute.

Whitaker found the back of the net with another impressive finish past Townsend, and even though Courtney Baker-Richardson hit the crossbar from a corner shortly after, Newport could not mount a comeback.
