Jess Park's early goal secures win for England over Spain

Jess Park scored in the first half to help England claim a 1-0 victory over Spain in the Nations League match held at Wembley Stadium.

This match marked the first encounter between the two teams since Spain defeated the Lionesses in the 2023 World Cup final.

Spain started off strong and had a close chance to score early on when Lucia Garcia hit the underside of the crossbar from a corner kick.

However, it was Park who found the back of the net in the 33rd minute, securing all three points for England against the second-ranked team in the world.

England's head coach Sarina Wiegman made a single change from the previous match, with Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton replacing Mary Earps.

Spain dominated the opening stages of the game, with Salma Paralluelo posing a threat from the left flank, but England's Millie Bright managed to clear her close-range attempt.

England had a brief spell of pressure inside Spain's half before the visitors had another chance from a corner kick, which saw Garcia hitting the crossbar again.

In the 20th minute, Spain came close to scoring when Claudia Pina tested Hampton, but the shot flew over the crossbar.

England earned a free-kick in a dangerous position on the left after Niamh Charles was fouled by Irene Paredes. Lauren James forced a save from Spain's goalkeeper Cata Coll with her curling effort.

James had another opportunity, this time from a long ball by Bright, but her shot was saved by Coll. England then appealed for a penalty after Leah Williamson was brought down, but the game continued without VAR intervention.

Park opened the scoring following a good run by Arsenal's Alessia Russo, whose shot was blocked by Paredes before Park capitalized on the rebound.

Spain attempted to respond quickly through Paralluelo and Bonmati, but their efforts were off target as Hampton made crucial saves.

As the first half came to an end, Hampton denied Bonmati once again to maintain England's lead.

After the break, Hampton made important saves to keep out Spain's attempts, while Grace Clinton's effort was saved by Coll.

The match experienced a brief pause in the 52nd minute due to a technical issue with the stadium lights, but play resumed, and James continued to trouble Coll with her shots.

Wiegman made a double substitution in the 64th minute, bringing on Chloe Kelly and Nikita Parris to add fresh legs to the England team.

Spain pushed for an equalizer, with Paralluelo and Caldentey having chances, but Hampton and the England defense stood firm.

In the closing stages, England nearly doubled their lead, but Coll managed to collect the ball just in time to prevent a second goal.

Despite Spain's efforts in stoppage time, England's defense held strong to secure the win.
