Morgan Gibbs-White honors Taiwo Awoniyi with goal celebration as Forest defeat West Ham

Morgan Gibbs-White celebrated his goal against West Ham in honor of injured team-mate Taiwo Awoniyi as Nottingham Forest stayed in the race for a spot in the Champions League with a 2-1 victory.

The captain of the Reds displayed Awoniyi’s shirt to the crowd after scoring the first goal in the opening half.

Forward Awoniyi is recovering from emergency surgery, following a collision with a goalpost in the previous weekend's match against Leicester, and is currently in a medically-induced coma.

Forest players showed their support by wearing shirts with Awoniyi’s name and number nine on the back, while the front of the shirts carried a message saying “we’re all with you Taiwo”.

Nikola Milenkovic scored a contentious second goal, and despite Jarrod Bowen's impressive volley for West Ham, Forest - already guaranteed European football next season - have set up a potential showdown with Chelsea on the last day for the final Champions League spot.

West Ham, who had a disappointing season, nearly took the lead early on when Vladimir Coufal provided a cross for Tomas Soucek, whose header was saved by Matz Sels.

Coufal, playing his final home game for West Ham alongside Aaron Cresswell, came close to scoring with a deflected shot that was stopped by Sels.

On the other side, Alphonse Areola made a crucial save from Gibbs-White and denied Chris Wood’s attempt.

However, Areola's mistake led to Forest's opening goal, as he passed the ball directly to Gibbs-White from a West Ham free-kick, giving an easy finish to the Forest player.

There was a tense moment for West Ham when Bowen collided with the goalpost while challenging for the ball.

The West Ham captain received medical attention for a cut above his eye and was assessed for concussion before being allowed to continue playing.

In the second half, Coufal, still in search of his first goal for West Ham, came close with a volley from the edge of the box that went over the bar.

Forest extended their lead when Milenkovic touched in Anthony Elanga’s free-kick, with the goal being confirmed after a VAR check lasting six minutes to review for offside.

During the match, referee Sam Barrott had discussions with both managers on the touchline, with PGMOL later explaining that the offside technology was unavailable and there were technical issues with VAR communications to the on-field officials.

Nevertheless, Elanga's assist was his 11th in the league this season, matching Forest's Premier League record set by Bryan Roy in 1994-95 - the last time they qualified for European competition.

Bowen scored a late goal by controlling Morato's header and firing it into the net three minutes before the final whistle.

Forest managed to hold onto their lead through over 16 minutes of additional time, with Sels making a crucial save from a Niclas Fullkrug header to keep Forest in contention for a Champions League spot as they head into the final weekend.
