Jamie Vardy nets 199th goal for Leicester in victory against Southampton

Jamie Vardy put an end to Leicester's long home goal drought in the Premier League by helping the team secure a 2-0 victory over Southampton in a match between two already relegated teams.

Vardy scored the opening goal at the King Power Stadium, marking his 199th goal for the Foxes and setting them on the path to their first win since January.

Jordan Ayew scored a second goal before halftime for Leicester, leaving Southampton needing one more point to avoid matching the lowest total in Premier League history, which currently stands at Derby's 11 points from the 2007-08 season.

Although Taylor Harwood-Bellis had a good opportunity to score for Southampton in the sixth minute, his header from Mateus Fernandes' corner was saved comfortably by Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk.

The opening goal for Leicester was a popular one, finally breaking their home goalless streak in the league since December 8, 2024, when Bobby De Cordova-Reid scored against Brighton.

In the 16th minute, Luke Thomas set up Bilal El Khannouss on the left wing, who delivered a low cross into the box that Vardy smashed into the net, bringing him one goal closer to his double-century for Leicester.

There was a strange incident when referee David Webb accidentally took a blow to the head from Ayew, who was focused on the game, leading to a brief halt in play before fourth official Sam Barrott took over for the rest of the match.

Leicester quickly regained their momentum after the delay and extended their lead just before halftime, as Ayew scored a powerful goal from outside the box, following up on his previous free-kick that was blocked by the wall.

El Khannouss almost added a third goal for Leicester in stoppage time of the first half with a cross that hit the top of the crossbar.

Southampton showed some improvement in the second half and came close to scoring when Stolarczyk saved a header from Paul Onuachu off a cross from Kamaldeen Sulemana.

Leicester had opportunities to increase their lead, with Wilfred Ndidi's shot from El Khannouss' corner being deflected wide.

Vardy came close to scoring his 200th goal with a free-kick that was saved by Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

El Khannouss missed a chance to pass to Vardy as he shot wide after a solo run into the Saints' half in the closing minutes, securing a comfortable victory for the hosts.
