Southend strengthens chances for play-off while Wealdstone's fight for survival takes a hit

Southend entered the National League play-off positions after a 3-0 victory at home over a struggling Wealdstone team now in the relegation area.

Ben Goodliffe put Southend in the lead in the eighth minute by scoring a header from Gus Scott-Morriss’ pass, then Charley Kendall increased the lead with a goal just after the 60th minute.

Goodliffe came close to scoring again in the 83rd minute with a header hitting the crossbar, but substitute Macauley Bonne sealed the win with a third goal in added time.

Under Kevin Maher's management, Southend climbed to seventh place, trading positions with Gateshead, with only one point separating the two teams. They are set to face each other in their final regular season match in the north east next Monday.

On the other hand, Neil Gibson's Wealdstone dropped to 21st place, trailing behind Dagenham in 20th place by just one point. Dagenham had moved out of the relegation zone after defeating Altrincham 6-1.

Wealdstone will play against Halifax in their final match, while Dagenham will face Solihull.
