Sheffield United dominate Coventry to regain top position in Championship

Sheffield United easily defeated play-off contenders Coventry at Bramall Lane with a 3-1 victory that pushed them back to the top of the Sky Bet Championship.

Gus Hamer kicked off the scoring against his former team with an impressive free-kick. Tyrese Campbell extended the Blades' lead to 2-0 by halftime, and Rhian Brewster sealed the game with a third goal.

Jack Rudoni managed to score a consolation goal for Coventry in stoppage time as Sheffield United secured their 10th win in their last 13 league matches, giving them a three-point lead over Yorkshire rivals Leeds, who will face Swansea at home on Saturday.

Sheffield United also increased the pressure on Burnley by moving five points ahead of them in the automatic promotion race. Burnley will play Bristol City at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Despite winning 10 of their previous 12 league games, Coventry struggled to create chances against their hosts, who dominated the game.

The first scoring opportunity came from Sheffield United, with Brewster's shot blocked by Jake Bidwell.

Although Coventry had more possession early on, Sheffield United's quality shone through in the 19th minute when Hamer converted a free-kick from 25 yards out, beating Coventry goalkeeper Oliver Dovin.

It was Hamer's eighth league goal of the season, and he marked the occasion despite his move from Coventry to Bramall Lane in August 2023.

The Blades doubled their lead in the 30th minute with Campbell finding the net after a well-worked move down the right side.

Coventry suffered another setback before halftime when Dovin had to be stretchered off after a challenge from Campbell.

Brad Collins replaced Dovin and made a crucial save just before halftime to keep the score at 2-0.

Coventry started the second half with more intent, but it was Sheffield United who extended their lead. Brewster capitalized on a chance created by Ben Brereton Diaz to make it 3-0 in the 62nd minute.

Sheffield United continued to create chances through substitutes like Callum O'Hare, Sydie Peck, and Hamza Choudhury, while Coventry also had their moments in attack.

Rudoni managed to score a late goal for Coventry, but it was not enough to overcome Sheffield United's dominance throughout the game.
