Bristol City secures crucial victory over Stoke with Anis Mehmeti’s brace in play-off push

Anis Mehmeti scored twice to bring his total goals for the season to 11 as Bristol City enhanced their promotion playoff hopes in the Championship with a 2-0 win over Stoke at Ashton Gate.

Bristol City took the lead in the 11th minute when Mark Sykes latched onto a precise pass from Scott Twine on the right flank and delivered a low cross for Mehmeti to convert from close range.

Mehmeti's second goal in the 73rd minute was even more impressive, a powerful volley from an acute angle that flew into the top corner after Rob Dickie had flicked a Max Bird corner into the penalty area.

Liam Manning's Robins fully deserved the victory, responding strongly after their surprising defeat to Swansea on Sunday.

Stoke, who are just three points above the relegation zone, fought hard but had no excuses for their inability to test Bristol City goalkeeper Max O'Leary sufficiently.

Mehmeti's early goal came after a bright start from Stoke. However, Bristol City created more clear-cut chances for the rest of the first half.

Twine had a shot saved by Viktor Johansson before the opening goal, while Bird narrowly missed the target with a shot on 18 minutes. Sykes and Armstrong also went close for the hosts.

Stoke had a good chance to equalize through Lewis Baker, but he volleyed wide from a Josh Wilson-Esbrand cross. Bristol City continued to threaten in the second half, with Dickie missing narrowly from a Twine free kick.

Bristol City finished the game strongly, with Johansson denying Hirakawa and Wells with impressive saves. Stoke, on the other hand, struggled to create any meaningful chances and were met with dissatisfaction from their travelling fans at the final whistle.

With just two points behind the top six, Bristol City are in a good position to mount a sustained challenge based on their performance in this match.
