Shaun Whalley nets crucial goal for Accrington against struggling Tranmere

Shaun Whalley scored the decisive goal to help Accrington in their quest to avoid relegation in League Two with a 1-0 triumph over Tranmere at Prenton Park.

This victory, which ended a winless run of seven games for Stanley, propelled them to 20th place in the league standings. They now sit seven points clear of the relegation zone, while Tranmere find themselves five points adrift after failing to secure a victory in their last 10 matches, increasing the pressure on manager Nigel Adkins.

Accrington had early opportunities to take the lead with Donald Love and Ash Hunter missing good chances within the first 10 minutes of the game.

Tranmere's Connor Jennings was denied an opening goal by a fine save from Billy Crellin, who tipped his close-range header over the crossbar.

Despite Hunter missing another great chance before halftime, failing to beat goalkeeper Luke McGee one-on-one, it was Accrington who broke the deadlock just five minutes into the second half. Whalley capitalized on a defensive error to score his eighth goal of the season.

Tranmere tried to equalize and came close when substitute Kristian Dennis shot just over the bar from six yards out.

Despite having further opportunities through Dennis, Josh Hawkes, and Regan Hendry, Tranmere suffered their fifth defeat in seven games and were met with a chorus of boos from the disappointed fans as they left the pitch.
