Bobby Thomas scored a crucial goal late in the game to secure a 1-0 victory for Coventry against QPR at the CBS Arena.
The match seemed to be heading towards a draw until Thomas headed in a corner from Jack Rudoni, giving Frank Lampard's team their fifth win in six league matches.
Coventry had been on a four-game winning streak before suffering a defeat to Leeds and a heavy 4-1 loss to Premier League side Ipswich in the FA Cup over the weekend.
Rangers and Coventry had been among the top-performing teams in the last 20 games, with only the top four teams accumulating more points during that period as both clubs managed to turn around their poor starts to the season.
Going into the game, both teams were level on points with only four goals separating them.
Michael Frey had a great opportunity for Marti Cifuentes' side, but his attempt was stopped by Coventry goalkeeper Oliver Dovin after a precise cross from Kenneth Paal.
Ilias Chair played a key role in the build-up, setting Paal up for a chance which was saved by Dovin as the Moroccan tried to score with a shot from the left.
Dovin had a busy night, making a spectacular save to deny Paul Smyth in the first half.
Jack Colback, who returned to the starting lineup for QPR since September, missed the target with a shot following a cleverly worked corner kick.
QPR goalkeeper Paul Nardi was forced into action by Matt Grimes and made an excellent save before blocking Ellis Simms' rebound attempt.
Rudoni and Torp had chances for Coventry, with Nardi having to deal with a deflected shot from Torp.
Although Tatsuhiro Sakamoto thought he had scored for Coventry late in the game, the goal was disallowed by the linesman.
However, Bobby Thomas secured the win for Coventry by heading in Rudoni's corner, earning his team three crucial points in their push for a spot in the play-offs.
