Julian Alvarez scores twice as Atletico Madrid secure comeback victory

Julian Alvarez found the back of the net in the 90th minute, scoring twice to lead Atletico Madrid to a 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League despite both teams ending the game with 10 players.

Alvarez, who joined the team this summer, played a key role in helping Diego Simeone's side come back from a goal down after Pablo Barrios and Piero Hincapie were sent off during Tuesday's match.

It was Hincapie who initially put Xabi Alonso's Bundesliga champions in front with a header, but things took a turn when the defender was shown a red card in the 76th minute, changing the course of the game.

Alvarez's late goal secured Atletico Madrid's fourth consecutive victory in European competitions.

Bayer Leverkusen started the game on the front foot, and had a goal disallowed for offside following a slick attacking move. Granit Xhaka played a precise pass to wing-back Alejandro Grimaldo, whose delivery to Nathan Tella was turned in at the far post, but the goal was ruled out for offside as the scoreline remained level.

However, the momentum shifted in favor of the visitors after 25 minutes when Barrios received a red card. The midfielder fouled Exequiel Palacios and, in an attempt to regain possession, made a reckless challenge with his studs up, prompting the VAR to upgrade his yellow card to a red as Atletico Madrid went down to 10 men.

With the one-man advantage, Bayer Leverkusen took the lead before halftime. Nordi Mukiele picked out Hincapie with a pinpoint cross from the right flank, allowing the defender to head the ball into the net past Jan Oblak.

After Alvarez displayed calmness and speed to score the equalizer on the counter in the 52nd minute, Hincapie received his marching orders for a second yellow card.

Ultimately, it was the Argentine forward Alvarez who had the final say, outmaneuvering the goalkeeper to secure the winning goal.
