Michael Smith once again made an impact coming off the bench for Sheffield Wednesday by scoring a crucial goal in their 1-0 victory against Swansea.
Smith found the back of the net from the edge of the box in the 66th minute after Josh Windass intercepted a poor pass from Harry Darling to set up the opportunity.
Guided by Windass, Smith scored his eighth goal of the season, marking his third goal as a substitute in the last four matches.
The win propelled Danny Rohl’s team to the eighth spot, closing in within two points of the Championship play-off positions, while Swansea remained in 17th place.
Early in the game, Wednesday took control, with captain Windass creating a chance for Ike Ugbo in the ninth minute. Ugbo was denied by Darling after a well-placed pass from Windass.
Windass continued to be a threat, narrowly missing the target with a shot from the edge of the box, with Swansea's goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux unable to make a save.
In the first half, Windass delivered a cross that eluded everyone and went just wide of the post from the right side.
On the other hand, Swansea struggled to generate opportunities following the absence of key player Matt Grimes.
Despite efforts from new signing Lewis O’Brien, including a long-range attempt by Zan Vipotnik and a cross from Ronald that forced a save from Wednesday's keeper James Beadle, Swansea failed to trouble the opposition.
Swansea began the second half brightly, with Myles Peart-Harris forcing Beadle into action with a header from a cross by Ronald.
After Smith's goal, Wednesday took control of the game, testing Vigouroux with shots from Windass and Smith, both of which were dealt with by the Swansea keeper.
Swansea almost salvaged a draw when Jay Fulton scored in stoppage time, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
