Robbie McKenzie scored a powerful goal to secure Gillingham a 1-1 draw against Walsall, as both teams extended their winless streaks.
The match was intense, but lacked moments of brilliance. Jamille Matt opened the scoring with a close-range goal early in the second half, only for McKenzie to equalize with a spectacular 20-yard strike that hit the underside of the bar in the 68th minute.
After the equalizer, Gillingham had the better opportunities to score, although Saddlers' substitute Danny Johnson missed a chance to snatch a late win by sending a lob over the bar in the final minutes.
Walsall struggled to create clear chances in the first half, mostly resorting to long-range shots and set-pieces. The best opportunity fell to Gillingham, when Joseph Gbode's header was easily saved by Tommy Simkin.
A precise pass from deep unlocked Walsall's defense, as Evan Weir found Connor Barrett on the right channel. Barrett managed to elude his marker and deliver a cross-shot that was finished by Matt.
Despite Walsall pushing forward, McKenzie's unexpected goal surprised the home fans. Remeao Hutton's curling effort narrowly missed the target, and Armani Little's shot was cleared off the line by David Okagbue as Gillingham had the better chances to seal the win.
Gillingham's winless streak now extends to 10 games, while Walsall have not secured a victory in their last five matches.
