Port Vale's season finale marred by loss to Gillingham as Doncaster thwart their championship hopes

Port Vale, who had already secured promotion, lost 1-0 at home against Gillingham, dashing their hopes of overtaking Doncaster for the top spot in League Two.

Port Vale were relying on Doncaster to drop points against Notts County to have a shot at winning the title, but Doncaster sealed their championship with a 2-1 victory.

Gillingham secured the win with a fantastic goal from Aaron Rowe, capping a strong finish to the season in 17th place after a 12-game unbeaten streak, while Port Vale couldn't finish their campaign with a win.

Port Vale had the only shot on target in a dull first half, with Rhys Walters and Ronan Curtis testing Gillingham's goalkeeper Glenn Morris.

Just before half-time, Port Vale missed a great chance to score as Lorent Tolaj sent his effort over the crossbar.

Gillingham looked more dangerous in the second half, and Max Clark almost scored in the 55th minute with a shot that missed the target.

The winning goal came shortly after, as Aaron Rowe found the net with a superb strike from the edge of the box.

Despite a late surge from Port Vale, including a chance for Jayden Stockley that was saved by Morris, they couldn't find an equaliser.

Captain George Byers also had a late attempt saved, and Port Vale had to settle for second place in the league.
