Chris Forino scored a late goal to give Bolton a rare win over local rivals Wigan after more than ten years.
Forino tapped in a corner in stoppage time, securing Bolton's first victory against Wigan since a FA Cup match in January 2015.
The match ended in chaos, as Wigan manager Ryan Lowe was sent off and their goalkeeping coach Andy Lonergan was shown a yellow card in a heated touchline confrontation.
Bolton started the game stronger, with Joel Randall almost scoring from a shot that was deflected wide by former Bolton player Will Aimson.
Wigan had a chance with Maleace Asamoah heading wide from a cross by Jonny Smith.
In the second half, Bolton continued to dominate possession but struggled to break down Wigan's defense.
George Thomason forced a save from Wigan goalkeeper Sam Tickle with a long-range effort, while Aaron Collins had a shot blocked for a corner.
Just when the match seemed destined for a draw, Bolton capitalized on a messy clearance from a corner kick, allowing Forrino to score from close range.
