Stefan Teitur Thordarson helps Preston break their six-game winless streak against Portsmouth

Stefan Thordarson scored his second goal of the season to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory for Preston against Portsmouth in the Sky Bet Championship.

The 26-year-old displayed impressive skill to score the winning goal in the 87th minute of a match that only came to life towards the end.

Ryan Porteous scored his first goal for Preston in the 76th minute before Colby Bishop leveled the score with his second goal in three games.

Portsmouth began the game strongly and Terry Devlin missed a good opportunity in the 19th minute, failing to hit the target with his shot.

The away team were more attacking as Josh Murphy tested Freddie Woodman with a long-range effort and later forced Liam Lindsay to make a crucial clearance from a cross in the 37th minute.

Andre Dozzell came close to scoring with a clever attempt just before half-time.

After a slow first half for the hosts, Paul Heckingbottom made four changes at the start of the second half to try and energize the team.

The alterations brought more energy to the game, and one of the new players, Greenwood, set up a great chance for Emil Riis, but the striker missed the target.

Against the run of play, Portsmouth almost scored from long range, hitting the crossbar with a powerful shot.

It seemed like the match might end in a draw, but a late substitute, Ched Evans, set up Porteous to score the go-ahead goal.

However, Portsmouth quickly responded as Bishop headed in a goal from Murphy’s corner to level the score in the 83rd minute.

Shortly after, Preston had a chance to retake the lead, but a remarkable save from the Portsmouth goalkeeper denied them.

Nevertheless, Preston secured the victory with Thordarson's brilliant goal, capping off a fine individual performance.

Despite a late red card for Greenwood, Preston held on for their first league win in seven matches.
