Motherwell secures win against Dundee with Dan Casey's two goals

Dan Casey scored two goals to help new Motherwell manager Michael Wimmer secure a victorious home start against Dundee.

The Irish defender had no one marking him when he headed in from six yards after a corner from Andy Halliday in the 12th minute.

In the first half, Motherwell displayed a more attacking and assertive style as German Wimmer continued to build on a promising second-half display in their previous game at Tannadice.

Dundee managed to equalize in the 79th minute through Simon Murray's close-range effort, their only shot on target, after Motherwell's strong start was halted in the second half.

However, Casey secured a 2-1 victory for Motherwell five minutes later with a quality finish, volleying in a cross from substitute Harry Paton.

The win put an end to Motherwell's six-game losing streak and brought them within two points of the top six, while Dundee's fifth consecutive loss leaves them just three points ahead of bottom club St Johnstone.

Wimmer made four changes for his first match at Fir Park and set up his team in an attacking 3-4-3 formation. Wing-backs Tom Sparrow and Dom Thompson took risks, while Lennon Miller and Callum Slattery thrived in advanced positions alongside striker Luke Armstrong.

Casey's early goal rewarded Motherwell's energetic start, with the center-back remaining a threat from set-pieces. Miller had several close attempts from long range, including setting up Armstrong with a well-executed through ball that the striker failed to control.

Stephen O’Donnell forced a good save from Jon McCracken after a quick counter-attack involving Miller and Slattery.

In the first half, Dundee occasionally had midfielders breaking through the Motherwell defense, but they struggled to create clear chances even after gaining momentum in the second half.

As Motherwell's energy levels dropped before the hour mark, Sparrow came close with a diving header from Thompson's cross.

Although Dundee appealed loudly for a handball against O’Donnell, the lengthy VAR check deemed the decision in favor of Motherwell. The team remained resilient under pressure until Casey failed to intercept Joe Shaughnessy's long pass.

Charlie Reilly then assisted Murray's goal, which survived another lengthy VAR check for offside.

Nevertheless, Motherwell responded strongly. They regained control quickly, and Casey's superb finish restored their lead. The team managed to hold on during seven minutes of stoppage time without any major scares.
