Aston Villa fight back to dent Arsenal's title hopes

Arsenal suffered a setback in their attempt to win the Premier League title as they gave up a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa at the Emirates.

Initially, Gabriel Martinelli put Arsenal in the lead in the first half followed by Kai Havertz extending the lead 10 minutes into the second half.

However, Aston Villa quickly responded with Youri Tielemans scoring four minutes later and Ollie Watkins equalizing for the visitors.

Arsenal, feeling stunned, tried to find a winning goal after Watkins' goal in the 68th minute. Havertz seemed to have secured the win when he converted Mikel Merino’s shot with three minutes remaining.

Unfortunately, Havertz's goal was disallowed by VAR due to a handball, leading to a disappointing draw for Arsenal.

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery, who previously led Aston Villa to a 2-0 victory in April, dealt another blow to Arsenal's title hopes with this draw. Arsenal now find themselves six points behind Liverpool in the title race following Liverpool's late win against Brentford.

Adding to Arsenal's woes, defender William Saliba picked up a significant injury and will miss the next match.

In the early stages of the match, Villa struggled to gain control, but eventually, they weathered the storm, with the first shot on target coming from Ian Maatsen that was saved by David Raya.

Minutes later, Arsenal tested Emiliano Martinez, with a strong effort from Leandro Trossard.

The tension escalated on the sidelines as Mikel Arteta and Unai Emery had a heated exchange, resulting in Arteta receiving a yellow card for his protests.

Arsenal finally broke the deadlock with Martinelli's goal, which was confirmed after a VAR check, giving them the lead before halftime.

The second half began with Arsenal looking to secure their lead. Havertz thought he had sealed the win with a goal, but Villa quickly responded through Tielemans' header.

In a dramatic turn, Watkins scored the equalizer for Villa, stunning the Emirates stadium. Arsenal thought they had clinched a late victory through Havertz, but VAR disallowed the goal after a review.
