Leicester's struggles persist as they suffer a deflating defeat against West Ham

Leicester almost admitted defeat in their fight against relegation after a weak surrender to West Ham.

Tomas Soucek scored a goal on his 30th birthday and Jannik Vestergaard netted an own goal as the Foxes fell to a subdued 2-0 loss.

Ruud van Nistelrooy's struggling side have now been defeated in 11 of their last 12 matches, the latest four by a total score of 12-0.

With a victory, they could have been just two points away from safety, but they never appeared close to capitalizing on the other teams in the relegation battle losing this week.

A decade ago, Leicester was seven points behind when a 2-1 victory over West Ham sparked an improbable survival.

Currently, the gap is only five points, but Nigel Pearson's team was not as poor defensively as the current squad.

West Ham took the lead after 20 minutes with their first chance of the match, as Aaron Cresswell found space on the edge of Leicester's box.

Vestergaard could have easily blocked Cresswell's shot from 20 yards out, but he let it pass through.

The ball was deflected towards goal by Mohammed Kudus, who was unmarked and onside, from close range. Mads Hermansen made a crucial save, but Leicester's defenders watched on as Soucek casually tapped in the rebound.

The defending was even worse when West Ham extended their lead just before half-time.

Jamie Vardy failed to clear James Ward-Prowse's corner kick at the near post under pressure from Jarrod Bowen.

Bowen was allowed to move along the goal line before his shot deflected off Vestergaard's leg and rolled into the net past Hermansen.

Bowen had scored his 50th Premier League goal in their surprise win at Arsenal on Saturday, but his 51st goal will have to wait as it was registered as an own goal.

In the second half, Leicester managed a few attacks, with Vardy's shot blocked and Vestergaard's header saved by goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

West Ham's loan signing Evan Ferguson was given playing time in the final 20 minutes and had an opportunity to score when Bowen set him up, but Wout Faes blocked his attempt.

The final whistle marked consecutive Premier League victories for West Ham for the first time since March, showing signs of progress under new manager Graham Potter.

However, they are unlikely to secure a more straightforward win than this against a team that seems to have given up completely.
