Netherlands expected to prevail in close match against Romania

Netherlands are predicted to overcome Romania in Munich to secure a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

The Dutch have somewhat struggled into the round of 16 thanks to a narrow victory over Poland and a respectable draw against France before being defeated by Austria in the group stage.

Ronald Koeman's team will need to improve if they aim to progress to the later stages of the tournament and they are expected to be challenged by a Romania team that also earned one win and a draw as they advanced as surprise Group E winners.

Team news

Romania left-back Nicusor Bancu is suspended so either Deian Sorescu or Vasile Mogos will start in his place.

Edward Iordanescu's team from Romania ended up at the first position in Group E.

Razvan Marin has not fully participated in training leading up to the match but is likely to start.

Koeman is expected to have a full squad to select from but Joey Veerman, who was substituted in the first half against Austria, is expected to be on the bench with Xavi Simons returning.

Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee was dealing with sickness over the weekend but should have recuperated in time for Tuesday's game.

The stats

Netherlands had 39 shots on goal in their three group matches, seven more than Romania managed.

However, Romania registered 14 shots on target, four more than the Dutch.

Romania's 3-0 group stage triumph over Ukraine is their lone victory in their last seven outings.

Netherlands have emerged victorious in four of their last seven games.

The two nations have faced each other 13 times previously, with Netherlands winning nine times. Three matches ended in a draw, and Romania has claimed victory only once - a 1-0 win in a European Championship qualifier in October 2007.

Prediction

Netherlands started the competition in a promising manner, coming from behind to defeat Poland in their opening match thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst.

The goalless draw with France that ensued was also considered a positive result and the Dutch were unlucky to have a controversial VAR decision disallow Simons' goal in that game, which might have secured a significant victory.

A 3-2 loss to Austria in the final group match was disheartening, but they have displayed enough in Germany thus far to indicate they can overcome Romania with Gakpo, who has netted twice, and Memphis Depay, who scored in the last group match, appearing threatening in attack.

Following a remarkable 3-0 victory over Ukraine, Romania was brought back to reality by a 2-0 defeat to Belgium.

They concluded the group stage with a 1-1 draw against Slovakia, finishing atop due to their superior scoring record with all four teams tied on four points.

They seem capable of containing the Dutch initially but Koeman's team should possess enough experience and quality to secure the win in the second half.
