Germany advance to quarter-finals of Euro 2024 following victory over Denmark in weather-impacted match

Germany defeated Denmark and tough weather conditions that led to play being stopped to advance to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

In the second half, Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala scored to give the hosts a 2-0 victory after Denmark had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside just moments before. Germany will now face Spain or Georgia in the next round.

But the night was not without its share of drama in Dortmund, where English referee Michael Oliver halted the match after 35 minutes due to thunder and lightning.

After a 24-minute break, the game resumed in front of drenched fans who tried to shield themselves from the heavy rain with makeshift covers.

Germany nearly scored early on as Nico Schlotterbeck headed in a corner from Toni Kroos, but the goal was rightly ruled out by Oliver for a foul committed by Joshua Kimmich.

The home side continued to dominate, with chances for Kimmich, Schlotterbeck, and Havertz all saved by an impressive Kasper Schmeichel in the first 10 minutes.

Denmark started to find their rhythm as Christian Eriksen and Joakim Maehle threatened before the storm hit.

Once play resumed, both teams had opportunities before the halftime whistle.

Havertz missed a clear header and Rasmus Hojlund came close for Denmark, but was thwarted by Manuel Neuer's goalkeeping.

Denmark thought they had scored early in the second half through Joachim Andersen, but the goal was disallowed for offside detected by the technology. Havertz then converted a penalty to give Germany the lead.

In the 68th minute, Musiala extended Germany's lead with a calm finish, putting him joint top scorer of the tournament alongside Georgia's Georges Mikautadze with three goals.
