Hungary vs Switzerland match preview: Hungary favored to defeat Switzerland

Hungary is considered as a surprise contender at Euro 2024 after topping their qualification group without a defeat, edging out Serbia.

Despite a recent 2-1 loss to Republic of Ireland in a warm-up match in Dublin, Marco Rossi's team recovered well by defeating Israel 3-0 on Saturday.

They are in good form heading into the tournament and are expected to be strong against Switzerland, who drew 1-1 with Austria in their final preparation game for the Euros.

Team updates

Peter Gulacsi is likely to start in goal for Hungary over Denes Dibusz, with Dominik Szoboszlai leading the team as captain.

There are concerns over the availability of Loic Nego and Callum Styles, who have not fully participated in training before the tournament.

Switzerland could miss forward Breel Embolo and midfielder Steven Zuber, so Zeki Amdouni may lead the attacking line, while Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri are expected to feature in midfield.

Match statistics

Since June 2023, Hungary has played 12 matches, winning seven, drawing four, and losing one.

Switzerland has drawn seven of their last 11 games.

In the FIFA rankings, Switzerland is 19th, while Hungary is 26th.

Out of their previous 46 meetings, Hungary holds a better record against Switzerland with 30 wins, compared to Switzerland's 11 victories and five draws.

Forecast

Having put the disappointment of missing out on the 2022 World Cup behind them, Hungary enters Euro 2024 in a strong position after a successful past 12 months.

Drawn in Group A with Germany, Scotland, and Switzerland, Hungary has a good chance of reaching the next round and should start with a win in their opening match.

While Switzerland has a solid track record in Euros, often securing draws, Hungary's quality players like Szoboszlai, Sallai, Kerkez, and Varga should give them the edge in this contest.
